Why I love Drupal

Last weekend, I went to Drupal Camp Toronto II. Not only did I get to spend a weekend in a beautiful city (Toronto is a world-class city and it's almost a One Tank Trip-- I hope Neil Zurcher doesn't sue me for that) but I got some good insight into Drupal. I found out a few things:

  • I am not the only guy named Derek that seems to think that multi-site Drupal is fun (thanks Derek)
  • I know now what the Baheyeldin Dynasty is...other than a place for good Drupal knowledge(thanks Khalid)
  • Tabooli and Tofu sandwiches are pretty tasty...and filling. (thanks Vert)
  • Toronto is pretty easy to get around. In the city, Toronto is amazingly accessible.
  • People bike to and fro' a lot in Toronto. It was sometimes surprising and heartening to see.
  • Buy money BEFORE you leave your own country...I walked around for a good hour and a half Friday morning until I found a currency exchange / check cashing spot that was open early/24 hours. Other than having my bags on me, it was great. Toronto in the morning was beautiful. The street cleaners were out, construction workers were gearing up. People were making their way. It was beautiful...and I wouldn't have had that experience if I had bought my money in the states before I left.
  • A scripted way to keep your Drupal code fresh and version controlled could be useful -- thanks again Derek. It could be more useful written in Python -- thanks Clifford.
  • Pro Drupal Development is a great book. I have read, just read, a couple of chapters. You don't normally just read tech books. Usually, you code along or use them as reference. But, I have been actually reading this one. I loved the forward (big up to Dries - creator of Drupal) and my experience with the community has been a bunch of welcome surprises too.

I have met people from all around the world from many different walks of life because of my use of and involvement with the Drupal community. Everytime I come to a conference or see a site that I like that uses Drupal, I want to be a better citizen. Why? Because this is a worthy and amazing piece of software. It brings people together, not just those that do development on it, not just those of us that use it but those that use Drupal to connect with the bigger world.
